2014 Tinhorn Creek Gewurztraminer – Vintages 904185 – $18.95 – ****+ – Let me get the food pairing out of the way immediately with this note. This is not a review to tell you to pair this with Asian cuisine — even though it does pair very well. This is a note to tell you to fry up some perogies (or pierogies) pick up some sausages and saurkraut and put it together. Spring is on the horizon but we aren’t there yet so let’s bring on the comfort food! The flavours are soft and balanced with tropical and rose petal flavors and aromas. There is just a hint of sweetness on the finish of this wine that just pair so well with the salt you find in your bavarian feast.
2012 Fielding Red Conception – Vintages 189183 – $18.95 – ****+ – This is the definition of exceptional value from Ontario. I like to refer to wines like this as a “gateway wine”. What I mean by this is that if you’re a budding wine fan and maybe have a couple of bottles stowed away for a special occasion you can pick up a few bottles of this to help build up a new wine collection. When I’m talking about a Gateway wine I mean that it’s a wine that is drinking great right now or one you can cellar. There is no guilt in popping this bottle open and gulping it back immediately with simple pasta and sauce but it is elegant and delicious enough that you could put this on a table with a prime rib roast and impress everyone. Smoke, Blackberry, Raspberry waft out of the glass. The fruit in this wine is strong and Raspberry, Strawberry and Cherry. Enjoy right now or cellar for 5-7 years.
