In early August I had an opportunity to pop in to Legends Estates to see what Derek Barnett has been working on for his Meldville label. The third edition bottles are making their way out, and there are more wines going into bottle in the fall. The Sauvignon Blanc continues to be a highlight in the portfolio. But there is a serious return to form with the third edition Cabernet Franc. It really is one of the great things about Derek is that across entire portfolios there are only strengths – so for those of you who miss the Lailey Syrah, Chardonnay … and Cabernet Franc the upcoming wines should be very exciting for you.
2017 3rd Edition Sauvignon Blanc – $19.95 – ****+ – There is a concentrated tropical note on the nose and on the palate. There is nice texture on the mid palate, but the acids are crisp and bright on the finish. This is easly one of the best value Sauvignon Blancs on the market from anywhere.
2016 Barrel Select Chardonnay – $29.95 – ****½ – This vintage of barrel select offers a little restraint compared to last year. With this restraint comes finesse and elegance – this is built for a few year in a cellar should you have the patience. But there is no need to wait to enjoy vanilla, apple, pineapple, and a bit of baking spice all dancing on your tongue in perfect harmony.
2016 3rd Edition Cabernet Franc – $27 – **** – A true return to form for Derek Barnett, my favorite wines from Lailey always were the Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon… I can’t help but be reminded of these wines when I take my first sip out of this glass. There is a hint of savory walking hand in hand with plum, blackberry, blueberry and raspberry. The tannin is already soft and well integrated making this wine approachable and enjoyable immediately, but should you have the patience this should evolve nicely over the next 5-7 years.
