Wine Review October 30, 2011 – 2009 Megalomaniac Homegrown Red – 2008 Kacaba Unoaked Chardonnay

2009 Megalomaniac Homegrown Red – LCBO 260364 – $16.95 – Here is another red that just like last week drinks great right out of the bottle.  It is a more traditional Bordeaux blend with Cabernet and Merlot, so it feels like I’m getting back to basics after some more interesting red blends (Red Palette Oct 16, Famly Tree Red Oct 9).  While there are notes of black pepper just as you would expect from Cabernet Franc these all dissipate the deeper into the bottle you go.  I realize that this is the same note I made about last weeks Red as well, but the end result is very different with very strong notes of Vanilla and even Dark Chocolate.  What is great about this wine is that with how it behaves with exposure to Oxygen it will pair perfectly with your entree if you’re doing roast beef, pot roast, or even stew but if you can hold onto an extra glass in the bottle for Dessert it will make an excellent counterpart to your whole meal.

Just another note about this wine as well, while this is an outstanding wine… don’t stop here if there is any wine that will convince you to get down to wine country and visit their estate it’s the Homegrown wines (they have the GPS coordinates ON THE BOTTLE) But make sure you try some of the other wines offered by this winery.

2008 Kacaba Unoaked Chardonnay – LCBO 101469 – $14.95 – Another outstanding well priced wine from this excellent Winery.  It’s been awhile since I’ve had a chance to talk about Unoaked Chardonnay.  This is a very dry Chardonnay with nice acidity to keep it very food friendly.  My favorite thing about this Chardonnay is you can almost taste the Oak in absence, but it is most definitely not missing anything.  This is a crisp wine with very focussed flavors that taste like fall (apple and pear especially).
