I usually feature wine from Ontario but that doesn’t mean that I don’t drink wine from elsewhere in the world. This week I thought I would do something a little different… This is where you can do your own experiment in Terroir where you can see how grapes grown in different climates and soils can taste similar… but different at the same time. I am featuring Sauvignon Blanc this week.
2012 Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough – LCBO 426601 – $16.45 – Sauvignon Blanc is described by many as the signature of New Zealand. If you’ve ever had the chance to drink Sauv Blanc from New Zealand you know exactly what I’m talking about. This wine is very herbacious and strikes an interesting balance between flavours of Bell Pepper and Lime. What you will find in this wine is very intense, rich flavours that almost sizzle on your whole palette. The finish on this wine has a nice acidity that begs for the next sip.
2011 Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc – LCBO 22251 – $11.95 – We now go to South Africa. Flavours are typical of Sauvignon Blanc but much tamer than the Villa Maria. You end up with a wine that is very easy drinking and great for the price. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get good Sauvignon Blanc. While very herbacious the fruit flavours are leaning towards tropical fruit with citrus.
2011 Peninsula Ridge Sauvignon Blanc – LCBO 53678 – $13.95 – Heading to Ontario you get a wine that leans much more towards wonderful citrus flavours. Lemon and Grapefruit are the driving force overtop of subtle herbacious flavours on the finish. If you’re looking for a great economical bottle of Ontario White Sauv Blanc is a wine where you will rarely be disappointed.
I can’t leave out the Red Wines. Here is something I have really been enjoying so far this spring.
2011 Cave Spring Gamay – LCBO 228569 – $14.95 – This Gamay is fantastic, easy drinking, and I would recommend this wine at any price … but the 15 dollar price point really makes this wine a steal. Very ripe, juicy fruit flavours cover your palette feeling just like taking a bite of Cherry Pie. The finish has a subtle spiciness to it that is typical of Gamay. This wine is very versatile to pair with food and should match with just about anything you could serve off a BBQ.
