Mike Weir The Underdog/Sauvignon Blanc

I stopped by the Mike Weir Winery during “Get Fresh” in the spring of this year.  I haven’t done much tasting of the wines at Weir lately.  When they do make their way into my home I have always enjoyed them.  I know most of us have already forgotten about the winter, but I am making sure that I am spending every day possible on a balcony, patio or dock to make sure I am enjoying every minute possible of summer.  What better way to enhance your enjoyment with a couple of bright crisp white wines that are not complicated, easy drinking and need no food to enjoy.

2014 The Underdog White – LCBO 248746 – $13.95 – ***1/2 – A true kitchen sink blend with Riesling, Chardonnay Musqué, Auxerrois, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris.  It’s floral, but not as floral as Gewürz or Musqué.  Flavours are Apple, Pear, Peach with notes of Rose and white Flower on the finish.  This is a dry wine with nice refreshing acidity.  The fact that there is so much going on in the bottle makes it great if you decide to chill it right to fridge temperature because the wine will change dramatically as it warms in the glass in the hot weather.  Pair with nothing but warm weather.

2014 Weir Sauvignon Blanc – LCBO 686972 – $14.95 – ***1/2+ – Sauvignon Blanc doesn’t always get its fair shake because it is completely eclipsed in the shadow of high quality Chardonnay from Ontario.  There are a few great Sauv Blanc’s in the regular list at the LCBO including this one.  Bright and citrus with hints of grass on the nose.  The flavours start citrus with lots of lemon and move to tropical with passion fruit front and center.  This wine is also very dry and while it’s great on its own you can pair this with a shore lunch or any seafood you decide to bring home from the grocery store.
