Wine Review January 17 – 2013 Henry of Pelham Special Select Late Harvest Vidal – 2012 Featherstone Red Tail Merlot

2013 Henry of Pelham Special Select Late Harvest Vidal – LCBO 395228 – $19.95 – I love late harvest wines … I love serving them to company as an alternative to Icewine.  Don’t get me wrong, I still love Icewine but it can be quite pricy to keep yourself stocked up in great Icewine.  There is a great recipe in the latest issue of Food and Drink that calls for late harvest (Page 248 – Pork Tenderloin with Passion-Fruit Glaze).  Late Harvest usually has about half the Sugar of Icewine but very similar flavours.  Honey and Apricot are what you will find in this bottle.  Just like with Icewine make sure to not pair with Dessert it will shine with your appetizer or entrée.  It made a perfect match to my Pork Tenderloin.

2012 Featherstone Red Tail Merlot – Vintages 131540 – $19.95 – This wine is always fantastic… simply put this Merlot sets the benchmark for consistency from a varietal that has a habit of coming out of the bottle under-ripe.  Lots of very ripe, and juice flavours of raspberry, plum and cherry with velvety smooth tannin on the finish.  This is something worth picking up more than one bottle and enjoy it over the next few years.  However, there is no cellaring needed to enjoy this wine right now!  This will pair with your beef dishes.
