I have been gearing up for summer with several Rosé’s. I find when Rosé is done well, and this week both are done VERY well, they are among the easiest drinking wines. These are wines that are un-complicated yet refined. My favorite thing about Rosé is that being neither a white or a red they fall in a nice limbo for food pairing… I am purposely vague with my food suggestions because the bottom line with most selections is it comes down to your personal preference. That rings double true for Rosé. On to this weeks selections, I get a sense of satisfaction finding great Vintages wines under $20, both of these come in at that price point.
Megalomaniac Pink Slip Pinot Noir Rosé 2011 – VINTAGES 85126 – $17.95 – I had a chance to try this at the winery. I was pleased to get a bone dry Pinot Noir Rosé. It was explained to me that this wine came to be, because the grapes were not suitable to make a regular Red Pinot Noir (esentially they were given the pink slip). I am glad they did not go to waste. This wine has a crisp acidity that brings out flavours of Rhubarb, making it great for late spring/early summer. Being very dry the flavours are not over-powering. The finish on this can only be described as refreshing.
Malivoire Ladybug Rosé 2011 – VINTAGES 559088 – $15.95 – This wine has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Consistently great year after year. Cherry, Raspberry and a subtle (very, very subtle) earthiness to it. Very dry with a crisp acidity (but not as sharp as the pink slip). Serve chilled with near endless food posibilities.
