Why would I suggest giving Pink Wine to dear old Dad on his day? Well frankly I find it a little funny to think that Rosé would fit so perfectly when I think of Dad. Many Ontario Rosé’s have interesting labels like Girls Night Out, the Pelee Pink has a large flower on the label and Malivoire is well known for their Ladybug. The reason is simple … Rosé is the swiss army knife of wine and food pairings when it comes to the BBQ! In spite of it’s colour, you get a wine that is light and fruity but still weighty enough to pair well with a heavily seasoned steak. Another reason, which I can’t stress enough, is that wineries are making very good, very serious Rosé. Many people still have the impression that Rosé is the sweet, cheaply made, hangover inducing beverage from the not so distant future. This is hardly ever the case anymore.
Wildass Rosé 2012 – VINTAGES 71712 – $19.95 – When I had a chance to review this wine I was drawn in immediately by the colour. This wine is so dark it is as close to red wine as you will get without actually being a red wine. Flavours are very intense of Strawberry and Raspberry. The finish is refreshing while this wine is quite dry (7 g/l or a 1 on the old sugar scale) when it rolls off the back of your tongue you are waiting for a bit of sugar to stick around … this only makes you anticipate your next sip even more.
Malivoire Ladybug Rosé 2012 – VINTAGES 559088 – $15.95 – A little lighter and a little sweeter than the Wildass but just as easy to drink. The nose on this one is filled with Raspberry and even Watermelon. Light on the Palette with a nice balance between sweetness and acidity that lingers. Fruit flavours are vibrant and zesty while they dance on your tongue.
Pink House Wine Co. 2012 Chardonnay/Merlot – LCBO 324558 – $12.95 – Even though this is the cheapest of the three Rosé’s I could not resist including it on the list because frankly I love the label … This is a bottle of wine if your Dad has been wanting to get into wine but maybe has been overwhelmed at the LCBO. The rules printed on the back are as follows:
– We will not talk about fruit forward flavours.
– We will not mention Oak aging.
– We will not discuss the long, elegant finish.
Bottom line … toss some ribs on the BBQ, cover them with sauce, pop the pink house and enjoy.
Happy Father’s Day!
