Wine Review January 15, 2012 – 2010 Gypsy White – 2007 Greenlane Greetings Cabernet Merlot

2010 Gypsy White (Kacaba) – $11.95 – LCBO 215053 – I know that I heap high praise on many of the wines that I review, but this is the best wine at this price at the LCBO.  While last year the Gypsy White was filled with melon flavours and a little more subtle on the finish.  This is a very good offering, that while there is a strong pressence of Canteloupe and Honeydew, there is an abundance of citrus flavours and higher acid on the finish that will make it easy to pair with food.  That being said I would prefer to drink this on it’s own than with food.

2007 Greenlane Greetings Cabernet/Merlot – $14.95 – VINTAGES 256271 – This is a very good dry to medium bodied red wine from the excellent 2007 Vintage.  You are seeing fewer and fewer bottles from this year around so grab it up while you can.  I don’t often recommend very specific food pairings with the wines that I recommend because for the most part following my rought guidelines will enhance your meal through the wine and food pairing.  I don’t like making things complicated because not everyone is going to want to eat Lamb Stew with that hearty red I recommended.  That being said, I had a chance to try this wine last fall during the Wrapped up in the Valley event and Greenlane served this with a macaroni and cheese with pulled pork in it.  Pair this one with a hearty mac and cheese, even Kraft Dinner if you must, but don’t leave it plain you’ll want to pair this with fancy macaroni and cheese.  Try your tried and true recipe but maybe swap the cheese with a smoked cheddar, or add some blue cheese.

There are some great events happening in the NIagara region today!  I’ll be out and about checking both.
