Southbrook is offering a couple new “entry level” wines with their Seriously Cool Red and White. The name seriously cool seems to draw it’s name from a few sources. The climate of the wine growing region and/or the fact that these wines come on the heels of two very cold winters.
I have made no secret that I am a sucker for a snappy label and each version of these wines comes with your choice of three patterns. The important question still remains do the wines taste good? The answer is most certainly yes.
2012 Seriously Cool Red – LCBO 453639 – $15.95 – ***1/2+ – This is a blend of Gamay, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt. You don’t see these varietals very often at Southbrook but in some form they all seemed to work their way into the Connect series. It’s a little ironic that the first Seriously Cool Red would come from a very hot summer in Ontario. The nose is ripe and juicy cherry and raspberry. There is nothing subtle about the aromas of this wine. The flavours will fill your mouth right to the cheeks with Raspberry, Blackberry and Cherry with slight whispers of smoke. This is medium bodied with some nice weight to a medium finish. This is definitely a food wine and perfect for Steak, Burgers … pretty much anyway you can cook red meat.
2015 Seriously Cool Chardonnay – LCBO 457481 – $15.95 – ***1/2 – Bright, Crisp, Clean Finish … You can hear the polite round of applause when you open this wine because it is sure to be a crowd pleaser. The nose offers slight floral aromas but is driven by peach, pear and lemon. The flavours in this wine are Peach and Lemon in perfect harmony with bright crisp acidity and nice mineral on the finish. This will make a fantastic addition to patio weather (when it arrives) and should complement grilled or fried fish very well.
