I was in Saskatchewan towards the end of May and made a stop at my favorite watering hole Bushwakker. I’m a huge fan of just about everything they have on tap at this brew-pub but it was the wine list that piqued my interest this visit. They had two wines from a Saskatchewan winery. Living Sky winery specializes in fruit wines and Bushwakker was pouring both their Rhubarb and Black Currant wines. I have mixed feelings about fruit wines. I have had a lot that have just not been memorable. But I was excited to give these wines a try.
Black Currant – 18$ – ***1/2 – The balance was a little off for this wine on its own. It’s very tart but very nice flavours of black currant in the bottle. I have a hard time picture myself tossing back a glass or two of this on it’s own, but I think this will make a great match with Chocolate desserts or Cheesecakes. I would look to grab a bottle of this to make cocktails.
Rhubarb – 18$ – **** – This wine is beautifully structured and balanced. It is remarkable how much this tastes like a good Riesling. The flavours are citrus on the nose with slight hints of rhubarb. The flavours are all citrus until the finish where the rhubarb makes an appearance in the mouth. This wine is easy drinking and should pair well with seafood or freshly shucked oysters. I know Living Sky is as far from an Ocean as you can get but to not marry this wine with Oysters would be a damned shame.
