I guess I should stop calling myself a Syrah doubter. I don’t think that everyone should make it, or have it planted in Niagara but there are a few wineries who are consistently doing it well. Kacaba would be one of those wineries.
2013 Silver Bridge Vineyard Syrah – $29.95 – ****+ – This is the beast! The nose is smoky and meaty. It almost feels as though it’s punching its way out of the glass and into your nose. The wine is asking you to go to the butcher and buy a nice prime rib roast and cook it properly before it punches again. There is fruit in this wine with nice blackberry and dark plum. The finish on this wine is fantastic with grippy tannin and very strong lingering pepper notes on the finish. I can’t wait to see how this wine is going to age, if it will let me.
2013 Proprietor’s Block Syrah – $29.95 – ****+ – This would be the beauty! Soft and elegant, this makes a perfect counterpoint to the Silver Bridge Vineyard with fruit rising gracefully out of the glass. Blackberry mainly with hints of Raspberry tossed in there. There are hints of smoke on this wine as well, but they are subtle and take a backseat to a much more fruit driven Syrah. The tannin is already velvetty and soft in this wine with hints of pepper on the finish. This will also make a great pairing with the roast beef that the beast told you to go buy.
