Wildass is one of my favorite labels in the Vintages section.  It’s not pretentious and the wines are always fantastic.  I recently had a chance to get into the current Wildass lineup and I was not disappointed.

2012 Riesling – Vintages 129700 – $16.75 – Tons of apple in this Riesling.  Great acidity but still with a nice finish that mellows a bit.  You will want to be careful with serving temperature.  Take this out of the fridge 30 minutes before serving to bring the temperature up and you will find that the wine really opens up in your glass.

2009 White – Vintages 85100 – $19.75 – This is mostly Sauvignon Blanc but barrel aged for two years.  The wine has lots of tropical flavours; pineapple and banana with vanilla on the finish.  The subtle oak gives this wine great depth.  This is another wine that you could pair with lighter grilled dishes… but it is so unique and delicious you’re better off serving this with a group of friends and making them guess what they are drinking.

2011 Red – Vintages 86363 – $19.75 – Very, very good!  Mainly Cabernet Franc and Merlot, this is a very accessible… I’m sure that this will be great on the wine rack for the next few years, but it is difficult to find a Bordeaux (almost) blend that you can crack and drink immediately … this is it.  Perfectly medium bodied make it a great wine to pair with BBQ or to be enjoyed on its own.
