NV Big Bang Sparkling – Winery Only – $45.00 – ****1/2 – This is a very special wine. It’s the first sparkling wine from Big Head wines the name is definitely apt. The nose is lightly toasted bread, lemon and hints of vanilla. This wine is complex and rich and it’s almost a shame that it’s sparkling because when you put the wine in your mouth you are going to try to pick up on everything going on. Is that a hint of pineapple? a hint of apple? a hint of peach? vanilla? nutmeg? … and then it’s gone washed away by thousand of little bubbles and beautifully balanced acidity. That being said you are left with wafts of vanilla, toast and smoke that leave you ready for the next sip. The bar continues to be set high for Ontario sparkling wine and the Big Bang is a worthy contender to push the bar higher for very high quality sparkling. I’m sure I could make a note about aging potential for this wine but who are we kidding … saving this in any cellar will be a challenge for even the most serious wine “snob” it is drinking great now.
