Back 10 Cellars (October 2016)

There’s a few new releases available from Back 10 Cellars. Anyone who has spoken with me in the past year knows how much I raved about the 2014 Vintage of the Start from Scratch Chardonnay. Needless to say I ran to the winery as soon as I saw the 2015 was ready to go. Needless to say I wasn’t disappointed.

2015 Big Reach Riesling – **** – $22.95 – A solid balanced riesling with nice aromas of lemon, apple and peach. There is nice acidity to this wine and it finished clean with just a hint of sweetness that lingers on the palate. What makes this wine interesting is how the flavours of peach and apple take over your whole mouth with you sip on this wine. The acidity on the finish is almost like it’s sweeping your palate clean leaving your mouth eager for the next sip

2014 Cabernet Franc – **** – $28.95 – Just because a grape is known for it’s presence in Bordeaux blends doesn’t mean it’s obligated to be Bordelais. This is elegant and rich on the palate. There is a slight note of roasted herb on the nose and the palate but it is perfectly integrated with cranberry, blackberry, raspberry and just a whisper of cocoa on the finish. The overall elegance of this wine and the acidity on the finish makes this an essential food wine to be paired with roasted red meats.

2015 Start from Scratch Chardonnay – ****+ – $27.95 – Consistency is so important when it comes to making a wine as Canadian is this bottle of Chardonnay. Canadian oak barrel and indigenous yeast are were used to make this wine. The nose offers buttered popcorn, bright citrus notes and roasted pineapple with vanilla bean tossed into the mix. This comes in big and round with caramel and vanilla notes layered over pineapple, tangerine, apricot and peach. This wine finishes long and needs no food to be savoured.
