2013 Malivoire Gamay – Vintages 591313 – $17.95 – **** – The nose is dark cherries and damp earth right after a rainfall. This is textbook Cru Beaujolais with nice depth in flavours while still being a light red wine. The flavours are very concentrated cherry and just like the nose there is a nice earthiness on the finish with a soft pepperiness that rises right to the roof of your mouth. I think most people would say Gamay is the less refined cousin of Pinot Noir but frankly I like my wine that way. Bring this bottle to your fancy dinner party and watch everyone at the table drool over a perfect pairing with roast beef, turkey or pork. If fancy isn’t your style put this on the table next to homemade pizza or burgers (or if you’re really slumming it Pizza Hut is okay too). Regardless of vintage it seems that Malivoire have no problems knocking it out of the park every year with their Gamay.
2013 Southbrook Triomphe Chardonnay – $22.95 – ****+ – This is one of the best Chardonnay’s from Ontario at it’s price. It’s affordable and excellent. Loads of Vanilla, Apple and Peach in the mouth. The finish on this wine has a nice refreshing acidity but leaves enough of the vanilla flavour that rises right to the roof of your mouth. This will age gracefully for a couple years … but if you’re like me it is unlikely you can keep these bottles in the house for very long. I will be pairing this with grilled chicken, fried chicken and creamy pasta dishes.
