2010 Henry of Pelham Estate Cabernet-Merlot – Vintages 395855 – $24.95 – ****+ – This is approachable right out of the bottle but if you’re looking for an affordable bottle that will age for a few more years in a cellar. Aromas of Cocoa and Black Currant and flavours of Raspberry, Black Currant, Pencil Shaving and Cocoa on the finish. The tannin is still quite firm but starting to soften. If you decide to drink this right now make sure to decant for at least a half an hour before pouring. Serve with steak or roast beef.
2012 Charles Baker Picone Vineyard Riesling – Vintages 241182 – $35.20 – ****1/2 – This Riesling is one of my favorite farmers market discoveries. I had a chance to first taste the 2011 version of this wine last summer and I fell in love immediately. I now frequently sip on this wine whenever the opportunity allows. Don’t let the price scare you away, even though this is a little pricy for an Ontario Riesling it is worth picking up a bottle of two. Perfectly balanced between barely perceivable sweetness and bright crisp acidity you will find flavours of lime and lemon with a nice mineral note on the finish of this wine. You can expect to find me serving a bottle of this with homemade fried chicken but don’t expect that to happen for another 5-15 years.
