2016 Culmina Malbec - Not all wines need to sit in a cellar.

2016 Culmina Unfiltered ‘Jeunes Vignes’ Malbec – Winery Only – $29.00 – **** – Most wineries proudly decree Vieille Vignes on their labels I have never seen a winery proudly decree young vines. The idea is that old vines naturally being to produce less fruit – but at a higher quality, While Culmina is building their reputation on their Bordeaux style blend called Hypothesis – I feel this winery is delivering it’s best goods at their entry level. I love the R&D red blend – so to get this bottle of Malbec was quite exciting. The aromas are slightly smoky – but packs a lot of raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, and plum notes. There is a slightly floral note layered over the fruit. The tannin is firm if you decide to guzzle this right after opening – but it only takes a half hour or so before this opens and the tannin softens. This drinks a little too easy – and while it may not be the most ageworthy wine from Culmina – I don’t think that’s the aim. We all need something to drink while Hypothesis takes its sweet time sitting in your cellar.
