Eye on Italy: 2014 Scacciadiavoli Grechetto – 2010 Le Cimate Montefalco Sagrantino

2014 Scacciadiavoli Grechetto – Vintages 427591 – $14.95 – **** – Don’t feel bad if you’re not familiar with the varietal Grechetto. It seems this grape doesn’t make it into the bottle on it’s own very often and is often blended down with other varietals. Don’t let that deter you from picking up this bottle. The nose was interesting with strong mineral notes over subtle peach and pear aromas. The flavours of this wine match with the nose with a slight creamy texture on the mid palate and a floral quality that lingers on the finish. This wine has great balance but the creamy texture does leave for a medium long finish. I don’t like getting too specific with my food pairings but with this wine for some reason I feel it’s meant to be done with a chicken caesar salad or any salad that might partner up with grilled chicken. You can also enjoy this wine easily on it’s own.

2010 Le Cimate Montefalco Sagrantino – Private Order (http://www.cottonwoodagency.com/) – $25.00 – ****+ – Tasting a wine like this is one of the painful parts of reviewing wine. This was delicious and opened at least a year too early to really enjoy it. If you do manage to pick up some of this wine in the near future please set it aside for a little while or you can expect to have to decant this for a few hours. The nose is heavy with currant, leather and blackberry and it just sits in your nose. It took me a few minutes to get past the beautiful complex aromas in this wine. The flavours are Currant, Blackberry, Plum with Leather and Smoke bringing up the long finish on this wine. I really enjoyed this wine on it’s own without food.
