2014 2027 Wismer Vineyard Foxcroft Block Chardonnay – Vintages 421362 – $22.95 – ****½+ – This may be the most underpriced bottle of wine from Ontario to hit the shelves of the LCBO. The intensity of this wine is almost in contradiction to the balance in this bottle. The vanilla note is layered over roasted apple and baking spice. There is a nice mineral note that lingers after nice acidity to keep this from sitting too heavy on the palate. This virtual label is made by Kevin Panagapka and he currently does not have a tasting room … so you should run to the nearest LCBO to pick up a bottle because this isn’t going to sit on the shelves for long.
2015 Fielding Cabernet Franc – Vintages 36194 – $21.95 – **** – This wine is brooding and heavy out of the glass with a note of smoke, cocoa and vanilla sitting over raspberry and cassis. Once you take your first sip the fruit flavours unravel themselves on the palate with raspberry, blackberry and cassis. The tannin is still firm and will need some time in bottle to relax. I plan on enjoying this bottle young, but I will wait 6 months for things to settle down. This should age for 3-5 years in a cellar while still holding on to some of the fruit flavours underneath all the smoke and cocoa.
