Burrowing Owl for Christmas

2013 Burrowing Owl Meritage – Vintages 644906 – $54.95 – ****½ – The short word on this is that it’s outstanding. The nose is rich and complex – Lots of blackberry, black currant, cocoa, and licorice. The flavours in this wine are just as rich and complex as what you find on the nose. It seems the deeper into the bottle you get there is a floral flavour that starts to make an appearance. The tannin is velvet and approachable from the onset, but this wine will benefit from a bit of time in a decanter if you decide to open it now. That being said this has huge potential to age in a cellar for 10-15 years.

2013 Burrowing Owl Cabernet Sauvignon – Vintages 73098 – $44.95 – ****½ – The nose is floral over black currant, blackberry, blueberry and hints of smoke. This will need some time in a decanter if you decide to open it now, but it’s built to last at least ten years in a cellar. The flavours in this wine are intense with Dark Cherry, Raspberry, Blackberry, Black Currant. There is some nice spearmint, cocoa and smoke mixed in with all the fruit. I will be pairing this with a great cut of beef off the grill served rare.
