Wine Review September 16, 2012 – Colaneri Stellucha Riesling 2009 – Trumpour’s Mill Pinot Noir 2008

Colaneri Stellucha Riesling 2009 – Vintages 279778 – $15.95 – I have been waiting to talk about Colaneri.  This is a fairly new winery with a beautiful estate in Niagara on the Lake.  What is interesting is this winery is bringing an Italian flavour to Ontario.  I had a chance to visit their winery last year while the actual building wasn’t quite finished, they also didn’t have anything on the shelves of the LCBO.  I was very happy to see this offering available to the consumer without having to make the drive down to Niagara.  What I like about this wine (and others from Colaneri) is a subtleness in flavour.  This wine has everything you would expect from a great riesling, flavours of citrus and also some peach with nice acidity on the finish but everything is subdued compared to any other Riesling I have tried.  What this does for the wine is make it incredibly food friendly (I’ll say probably the most food friendly Ontario Riesling available in the LCBO right now).

Trumpour’s Mill Pinot Noir 2008 – LCBO 230227 – $16.95 – I have recommended some two very premium Pinot Noir’s from Malivoire and Norman Hardie, but let’s face it… spending 35$ for a Pinot isn’t something that most peoples pocketbooks can sustain for very long.  This wine isn’t as refined as some of the more premium Pinot Noir’s I have suggested recently, but it doesn’t have to be.  This wine is filled with flavours of Black Currant and Cherry and has enough bite on the finish that while Pinot Noir is usually a little lighter in flavours this would be a great wine if you’re looking for something a little different to pair with Barbeque.

I had a chance to speak with Angela Aiello this week as the https://iyellowwineclub.com/events is hosting some tours of Niagara.  This is a great opportunity to get out of the city, check out some of the wineries and not have to worry about driving around.  If you are reading this here enter promo code: newstalk101015 to get a 15% discount on your passes.  The tours run September 22 and September 29.
