2016 Nyarai Pinot Gris – $20.95 – **** – Pinot Gris from Ontario needs to bring great texture to the glass to be interesting. This bottle from Nyarai is definitely interesting. The weighty nose climbs out of the glass with heavy baked apple and peach aromas. A bit of a walking contradiction the first sip of the wine goes down easy and clean … but the second sticks around for a bit with the orchard fruit from the nose filling your whole mouth. This Pinot Gris finishes nice with the fruit lingering for a moment. That being said, this is still Pinot Gris! The food pairings are nearly endless with this (I’m not sure it would stand up to a steak).
2012 Nyarai Veritas – $27.95 – ****+ – A great reflection of the 2012 Vintage and one of the strongest offerings from Nyarai. The aromas are rich with cocoa layered over currant, blackberry and plum. On the palate the texture of this wine is pure silk and what feels like endless fruit rolls off the back of the tongue. This wine finishes with a nice cocoa note and a whisper of smoke. The tannin is so well integrated that you could drink this now, but there is nice structure so that this could age for 7-10 years easily.
