Wine Review June 28 – 2012 Union Squared – 2012 Thirty Bench Riesling

2012 Union Squared – Vintages 292359 – $17.95 – The new vintage of Union Squared has gotten a makeover and it looks great.  The wine in the bottle matches the exterior.  This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Gamay and Syrah.  What is interesting about this wine is that you can taste the best parts of each varietal.  The Cabernet and Merlot bring great Ripe Raspberry and Cherry.  The Syrah and Gamay bring very nice spice on the finish that feels like a blend between black and white pepper.  This will be a great match for your summer barbeque and at this price point you could just as easily serve it with burgers as you would with grilled beef tenderloin.

2012 Thirty Bench Riesling – Vintages 24133 – $18.95 – This is a great, bone-dry Riesling.  There are lots of flavours of apple and peach married with lemon.  There is nice acidity to this wine but it is subdued so you have a nice lingering finish.  What is fantastic about this riesling is that because none of the finish is from sweetness you could pair this wine with just about anything.
