2010 Trius Red – $21.95 – VINTAGES 303800 – This is one of those wines I would consider a staple. It was one of the first to be done very well, and also for many people this is the benchmark for how great a Bordeaux style blend can be. This is a great wine from the 2010 vintage and the first Trius` Rednew from winemaker Craig McDonald. I did find this to be a little harsh on the finish, but this appears to be typical of this wine when it is new in bottle. It is very drinkable, with a more powerful pressence of Plum, and Currant than in past years. To really enjoy this you will want to open it at least 30 minutes ahead of time (but more would be better). This will get better as it settles in the bottle, but the reason I like to recommend this wine as soon as it is in bottle is that for the next little while you will be able to find both the 2009 and 2010 vintages on the shelves of the LCBO. I don`t like to be too much of a snob looking for great wines to review but it can be a lot of fun to pick up both bottles and do a side by side comparison.
2009 Cave Spring Cellars Indian Summer Late Harvest Riesling – $24.95 – VINTAGES 415901 – This is a very good, clean, crisp Late Harvest. Anyone not familiar with Late Harvest, this is the cousin to Icewine. I like it because for the most part it is slightly less sweet, and also feels a little unrefined (in a good way). A little more subtle with flavours of Pear and great Citrus flavours typical of Riesling. Personally I like Late Harvest because it is a little more approachable than Icewine which can be a little pricy. While still more money than a very good table wine, it is still much less than most icewines.
