2009 Cattail Creek Pinot Noir – $18.95 – VINTAGES 257303 – I am still hesitant when I open up a bottle of Ontario Pinot Noir because of my own experiences with some less than stellar offerings. This is one of those wines that is so good, and so easy to enjoy it can change your mind about Pinot Noir. When I open a bottle of wine I pour it into the glass and take my first taste and decide whether it’s okay to drink right away or if it needs a little exposure to air for it to be at its prime. This Pinot Noir needs no time, open the bottle and enjoy. It is very fruit forward with a texture like jam as it sits right on the back of the tongue. A slight aftertaste that is not over powering. This wine is a two time bronze award winner.
2010 Megalomaniac Eccentric Savagnin – $24.95 – VINTAGES 273870 – It’s not often I open a bottle of wine that leaves me speechless. This is one where it took me a few days to figure out how to put it into words. This is a very unique offering from one of my favorite wineries in Ontario. It is a great medium bodied wine with an aroma that is reminiscent of a field in the middle of the morning. Flavours are to match with a strong note of grapefruit. If you’re used to drinking Chardonnay (either Oaked or Unoaked), or you’re not familiar with Savagnin this is something that would make a perfect departure from the usual. This wine comes in a very unique bottle and will definitely stand out on the shelf as you make your way to the vintages section. One last thing worth noting; I drank this over the course of two days, and after spending the night in the fridge with the cork in I found that some of the acidity had settled making it even better the second day.
