Stoney Ridge: A Tale of Two Chardonnay’s

2010 Excellence Chardonnay – $49.95 – ****1/2 – There shouldn’t be much left of this wine on the shelves of Stoney Ridge. Coming in just shy of fifty dollars I still think this is something that you should experience. Everything is perfectly in focus in this wine from the seductive nose to the long, satisfying finish. The nose is Vanilla, Butterscotch, Peach and Citrus. The flavours in this wine match the nose with some extra complexity and baking spice tossed into the finish on this wine. This wine is big and subtle all at the same time. Pair this wine with nothing it is meant to be savored on its own.

2011 Excellence Chardonnay – $24.95 – **** – Tasting this side by side with the 2010 Excellence Chardonnay was interesting because you would guess that the 2011 came from a warmer vintage. The nose is forceful with Tangerine and Roasted Pineapple with Vanilla slight hints of burnt caramel. The flavours are Pineapple, Cooked Peach and Orange with Butterscotch on the finish. This is a little rough around the edges compared to the elegant 2011 but at this price this will make a great addition to more casual get togethers or dinner parties. I would pour this with grilled chicken or at a fish fry.
