September 20th Braai Day – South African Wines!

At the beginning of Summer I had the opportunity to talk to winemakers from Fleur du Cap and Nederburg, two wineries in South Africa.  There were more than a few gems in the wines that I tasted but the standout to me still remains the Fleur du Cap Chardonnay ($12.80, LCBO 358960).

Now that we are at the end of Summer it’s time to celebrate South Afriacan wines with Braai Day.  Braai is the Afrikaans word for barbeque.  Everything you need to get you ready for September 20th can be found here: http://braai.ca/

If throwing your own Braai celebration isn’t enough, you can always celebrate on the 23rd with the iYellow Wine Club.  They are throwing their own Braai party.  Details here:  http://iyellowwineclub.com/event/south-africa-braai-day-taste-tweet

140919 - Braii Day

If you’re going to be grilling you’re going to need some Red Wine to go with your meat.  I recently tasted the Two Oceans 2013 Shiraz (LCBO 699249, $10.25).  Lots of heavy ripe red fruit like raspberry, cherry with a slight smokiness that is begging to be paired with charcoal cooked meat.  As with the Fleur du Cap Chardonnay this wine easily out performs it’s price point and is a perfect way to enjoy the last barbequing weather of the summer.
