2014 Featherstone Black Sheep Riesling – Vintages 80234 – $16.95 – **** – Keeping the bar high at Featherstone the new Black Sheep Riesling is Granny Smith and Golden Delicious Apple on the nose. In the glass you have Lime, Apple with a nice Mineral note on the finish. This wine is off dry with a nice sweetness to it but it still strikes a perfect balance between acidity and sugar. This wine is the essential hot weather Riesling for your summer. The alcohol content is only 9.5% which means you can gulp back a glass or two on a patio on a hot day without worrying about having that second glass be too much. A fun fact about this wine, the name comes from the sheep that roam the vineyards at Featherstone and help take care of pruning and fertilizing.
2011 Tawse Growers Blend Pinot Noir – Vintages 130989 – $24.95 – **** – This is one of those wines that I would consider a benchmark. It is hard to find a Pinot Noir of this quality from Ontario at this price. The nose on this medium bodied wine is cherry with subtle hints of nutmeg and allspice. In the glass you have lots of cherry with a subtle earthiness on the finish. This is another wine that is incredibly versatile for whatever you decide to eat with it. It will make a great match to Roast Chicken, or Grilled Salmon… but it will also pair well with less sophisticated meals like burgers.
