2012 Henry of Pelham Estate Riesling – Vintages 557165 – $17.95 – ****+ – This is a bottle of awesome right here. Off-dry and perfectly balanced with acidity. With the warmer weather this can be a little too easy drinking on a patio on it’s own. The fruit is pear, peach, apple and lemon with nice pronounced mineral notes on the nose and in the glass. For those of you looking to start (or add) to a collection this wine will easily age for 10-15 years. This will make a great match to pork dishes or chicken of any sort.
2012 The Good Earth Gamay Noir – Vintages 424317 – $19.95 – ****+ – I don’t know how much longer Gamay is going to be kept as a wine geeks secret in the province of Ontario. The Good Earth follows up a terrific offering from Tawse (https://andrewinereview.ca/2015/07/17/july-17-2013-cave-spring-estate-chardonnay/). The nose on this wine certainly packs a punch with nice red cherry, but there is also a heavy earthiness that wraps itself around the fresh fruit aromas. The flavours match the nose with meaty tannin that doesn’t over power the texture of the wine because of nice acidity and a slightly spicy finish. If you really want to enjoy this wine, toss it in the fridge for 30 minutes before pouring to take the temperature down to a few degrees below room temperature. This will pair very well with just about anything you can think of off the grill from Salmon to Chicken to Rare Beef. This will age for 5-7 years easily but is drinking fantastic now.
