2 Sisters – The 2012 Batch

The last time I was at Two Sisters was last year at this time. The new winery had my attention with their portfolio right from when they opened the doors. Very good Sparkling wine and Sauvignon Blanc were my favorites out of the gate. However, the Red wines showed tremendous potential. The wines were from the very hot 2010 vintage and came from vines that are very young. In spite of the youthful origin of the grapes the wines were rich, complex and delicious. Fast forward one year on the calendar and two years for your vintage and you get some wines that are truly impressive.

2012 Merlot – Winery Only – $48.00 – ****1/2 – The nose offers slight spice under raspberry and strawberry. The flavours on this wine are very complex and rich. This is youthful and will need some time in a decanter to relax for an hour before drinking. The flavours of Cocoa, Cedar and Smoke are front and centre in this youthful Merlot. However the importance of decanting if paramount and your patience will reward you with very ripe flavours of Currant, Raspberry, and Plum. I would wait 2-3 years before opening, but it will evolve over the next decade.

2012 Cabernet Franc – Winery Only – $48.00 – ****1/2 – This is everything that is right about Cabernet Franc from Ontario. Aromas of Raspberry, and Strawberry dominate the nose on this wine but peeking out from under all that fruit are just hints of roasted pepper. Flavours of this wine offer up Raspberry and Strawberry to match the nose but throw in some smoke and take a walk through an herb garden and you’ve got this Franc. Big and juicy this wine will fill your mouth right to your cheeks and offers up just a dash of something floral on the finish. The tannin is very firm and this wine is going to need some time in a decanter to really unlock the fruit flavours. I would wait 2-3 years before opening, but with patience should age well for the next decade.

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon – Winery Only – $62.00 – ***** – I last tasted this wine in December and what a difference a few months makes. I went in to this visit anticipating the Franc but ended up leaving fully in love with the Cab Sauv. The aroma brings a lot to your glass with a heavy floral quality followed by blueberry, blackberry, and currant. The flavours on this wine are rich and concentrated. This wine fills your whole mouth with flavour almost from the moment it passes over your lip. Very ripe fruit dominate the flavours in your glass with Blackberry, Currant and Raspberry. The tannnin is velvet and already approachable. I would still recommend decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving. This is going to be a difficult wine to keep in the cellar because it is very approachable right now but it will age very well for the next 7-10 years.
