I don’t often get outside of Ontario in my writing … but that doesn’t mean I’m not tasting wines from elsewhere. I recently had a chance to taste a new vintage of a wine I enjoyed a few years ago on a road trip out west, and also to taste what has become a new “must have” on my wine rack.
2011 Jimmy My Pal – $15.99 (BC Liquor Stores) – Chardonnay and Pinot Gris mate perfectly in this bright crisp wine that makes the winter seem even longer as it is begging to be enjoyed on a patio with some warm weather. Lots of bright Citrus flavours with hints of Pineapple and Peach but very dry with nice crisp acidity on the finish. Fifty cents from the purchase of each bottle go to help the BC SPCA. Sadly only available in BC but one can hope that someday soon we can get this in Ontario.
2009 Osoyoos Larose Le Grand Vin – Vintages 626235 – $44.95 – This is a very big red wine… In fact as far as Canadian wines go this just might be the Incredible Hulk. If you’re buying this to open right now you will need to decant this for a couple hours (minimum) to tame the heavy tannin in this bottle. Currant, Raspberry mate with flavours of Coffee and Cocoa with a nice long finish that has hints of Black Pepper and Allspice. If you’re looking for a wine to buy and save for a special occasion… or you’re trying to teach yourself a lesson in patience this will age for 5-10 years (maybe longer).
