Wine Review July 29, 2012 – 2010 Reif Cabernet Merlot – 2010 Hidden Bench Estate Riesling

We had some rain this week!  And also a bit of a break in the temperature which let me get into some Red wine.  But summer is not over yet.

2010 Reif Cabernet Merlot – LCBO 565713 – $13.75 – This wine is a teriffic value.  But the price isn’t even where to begin with what makes this wine fantastic.  Most wines benefit from exposure to air, but this one is great right out of the bottle giving you a strong smoky flavour that is full of raspberry.  As you get deeper into the bottle however the smoky flavours relax and bring out the fruit flavours.  The best way to serve a wine like this would be with Steak and Grilled Vegetables, open the bottle right away for your main course but by the time dessert rolls around the flavours will have softened… it’s almost like getting two different wines out of the same bottle.

2010 Hidden Bench Riesling – VINTAGES 183491 – $24.20 – Riesling and Pinot Gris are my two favourite summer wines.  This riesling is as close to perfection as you will find.  This is like a burst of sunshine in a glass full of great citrus flavours.  Not too sweet with a balance in acidity make this easy drinking… like with most excellent Rieslings you could say this drinks almost too easy… but that just means you’ll ned more than one bottle.  What makes this different is that in spite of the acidity, you are left with a nice lingering flavour on the palette.
