Wine Review August 12, 2012 – 2009 Megalomaniac Frank Cabernet – 2008 Stratus Sauvignon Blanc

2009 Megalomaniac Frank Cabernet – $24.95 – VINTAGES 205021 – I was very excited to see this on the shelf of the LCBO.  I made no secret that last years vintage was my favorite Red wine from Ontario for the year.  It looks like my little secret is now available to the masses.  This is a fantastic wine with teriffic value.  You’re looking at a very fruit forward Cabernet Franc with subtle earthiness and black pepper on the finish.  What is perhaps most exciting about this wine is that it is consistent with the previous years vintage.  I can’t wait to try 2010!

2008 Stratus Sauvignon Blanc – $29.20 – VINTAGES 243675 – I don’t get a chance to drink much wine from Stratus, and it’s not because I don’t want to.  This winery is known for their premium offerings… but that usually comes at a premium price.  So I can’t emphasize enough that when I recommend a wine pushing the $30 mark it’s worth checking out!  This wine is truly unique, you have Sauvignon Blanc that has been aged in Oak, you don’t see that every day.  What this oak aging has done is take the edge off the crisp acidity that you find in Ontario Sauvignon Blanc with very subdued mellow flavours of Melon and an aroma that feels like standing in a field first thing in the morning.
