Wine Review April 22, 2012 – STLTO Red/White

I have made it my mission to discuss great Ontario wines, because I still feel there is a certain stigma out there that they aren’t very good.  But even though I have no problems finding great VQA wines to talk about every week sometimes something catches my eye (and palette) that I have to talk about.  This week we’re heading to Italy.  But don’t worry, this wine has a strong local connection as Sarah Liberatore, from the GTA is resonsible for these great wines.

STLTO Red – $11.95 – LCBO 232272 – This is a Malbec/Merlot blend with a very nice acidity that makes it one of the most food friendly wines I have had a chance to try.  You have nothing to worry about if you are thinking of pairing this with white meats like Pork or Chicken.  Right out of the bottle this can be a little bit harsh so you will want to let this one sit on the counter open for 30 minutes before drinking to really get the most out of it.  While this can be good on it’s own like most Italian Red wines this is begging to be paired with good food.

STLTO White – $11.95 – LCO 232322 – I really liked this wine.  An Unoaked Chardonnay that is very different from our local offerings.  Less intense than great Unoaked Chardonnays from wineries like Gretzky or Kacaba, it does not take away from soft flavours of peach and lemon.  A nice clean finish that has the flavours roll off the back of the tongue almost before you realize it’s there.  This goes into the category of dangerously easy to drink.  As with most Chardonnays I prefer to serve this at fridge temperature.
