Pelee Island – Vinedressers Kick Ass!

When I recently visited Pelee Island I had the chance to visit their retail shop. Most people will associate this winery with the entry level wines available at the LCBO. What they don’t know is that there is a treasure trove of high end wines at the winery. I haven’t spoken to a single person about the Vinedressers Meritage who hasn’t loved it. If anything these two wines specifically are worth the visit down to the winery.

Vinedressers 2012 Meritage – ****+ – Your first sniff of the glass should let you know that this isn’t your typical Ontario wine. Coming from the warmest part of the province in the warmest vintage you can smell the very ripe fruit climbing out of the glass. Blackberry, Cherry, Black Currant, Cedar … This wine almost smells like it;s in the shadow of California, but it isn’t heavy on the nose it brings something elegant. When you look at the wine the colour of the wine is lighter than the aroma would have you believe. The flavours on the wine are complex heavier red and dark fruit flavours with Black Currant, Blackberry, hints of Blueberry, Raspberry, Strawberry. There is a whisper of smoke and lots of vanilla in the glass. In spite of this complex, heavy wine the finish reminds you that this is in fact a cool climate wine with nice acidity rounding out the package. Pair this with the best steak you can find or enjoy it on its own.

Vinedressers 2012 Chardonnay – **** – As with the Meritage this offers a tip of the hat to a warmer climate Chardonnay while still holding onto its Canadian identity. The nose is buttered popcorn and vanilla. The flavours are roasted pineapple, peaches and oranges with vanilla and spice on the finish. This may not be your cup of tea if you don’t like to taste the oak in your wine, but don’t worry the balance with flavours from the barrel and from the fruit is well integrated. Be careful with your serving temperature. If you serve this too cold it will bring out the oak flavours so it’s best just a few degrees below room temperature.
