Hinterland – New Vintages (Dec 2016)

There’s a few new wines available at Hinterland. If you missed out on scoring a bottle of Les Étoiles don’t worry, if you stow a couple bottles away they will be ready to go in time for 2018!

2013 Les Étoiles – $39.00 – ****½ – While reading this note I would like you to picture me wiping a tear from my eye as I give Hinterland a standing ovation for this outstanding bottle. Aromas of lime, lemon and granny smith apple work its way out of the glass. The flavours match the nose but bring up a nice creamy mouthfeel and a bready note that lingers for a moment before the crisp acidity kicks in and cleanses the palate. This is a prime example of why we should put the flutes away and bring out a white wine glass. There is a nice complexity in aroma and flavour that would be buried and trapped in the wine in a small glass. Food pairings are optional for this wine and enjoy this with the best of company.

2016 Whitecap – $22.00 – **** – This is your perfect wine for all your dinner party needs. This belongs on your table next to nearly any food you can serve (with maybe the exception of red meats). Simply put, there’s a reason why you can find this wine on so many wine lists in the city of Toronto. There is a nice floral note layered over bright crisp lemon drop on the nose and on the palate. This wine reminds me of warmer weather with the fresh floral core of this wine going from nose to finish. Bright crisp acidity and a nice dry finish round out the package. Great value and easy drinking this is a bottle worth stocking up on for any occasion around your house.

2016 Ancestral – $25.00 – **** – This wine is affectionately known as the Baby-Maker to those who have spent time around the winery. It’s off-dry with nice acidity to keep your palate from getting too sticky. This is all maraschino cherry on the nose and in the mouth. What’s interesting about the 2016 vintage of this wine is that it has notes of freshly cracked pepper buried under the vibrant candied fruit. There is no doubt that this is made with Gamay but there really is nothing like this in the province right now.
