Chateau des Charmes for the Holidays

2012 Chateau des Charmes “Old Vines” Cabernet-Merlot – Vintages 222372 – $21.95 – **** – This is very approachable and one of those wines that can drink a little too dangerously depending on the meal and company. Aromas of black currant and blackberry. There are hints of cocoa, and smoke on the nose and on the finish of this wine but it is buried under a ton of fruit. In the mouth the dark fruit is perfectly ripe and juicy. This will be versatile with beef whether it’s coming out of the oven or off the grill.

2014 Chateau des Charmes St David’s Bench Chardonnay – Vintages 430991 – $19.95 – There is so much going on in this bottle. It’s got some apple, some citrus, a bit of spice, but a nice mineral note. This mineral note runs right through this bottle from start to finish. This is perfectly balanced with nice vanilla and a nice creamy texture on the mid palate from the barrel. The use of oak on this wine is restrained and doesn’t overpower the fruit or mineral. There is a nice crisp acidity to this wine that keeps the palate clean.
