2013 Lailey Syrah (June 2015)

The weekend I was in Niagara tasting this wine it wasn’t supposed to be Syrah weekend but I was tasting with my friend Julian who loves it. I tasted Syrah at Marynissen, Lailey and Leaning Post (review next week). Needless to say I came home after eating my words that were washed down with delicious Syrah.

2013 Syrah – $30 – Winery Only – **** – The fruit on the nose is jammy and very ripe with nice smokiness. In the glass you will find blackberry, plum, raspberry with coffee and smoke on the finish. There is a nice meaty texture to this wine. It is drinking great right now but will soften over the next few years. This will age well over the next 3-6 years.

2013 Barrel Select Syrah – $40 – Winery Only – **** – Before I took a sip of this wine on the nose I was expecting something similar to the regular label Syrah. Coming from the same vintage this is a softer, more elegant syrah. The fruit is very ripe but more restrained and subtle. The fruit is blackberry, plum and raspberry with a bit of smoke and nice pepper on the finish. While I was tasting this wine I pictured it being served to lamb off the barbeque.
